What Teachers Are Learning Before School Starts
Did you know some AMS teachers are already back to school?
It may seem like summer has just begun, but for AMS teachers, school is starting back up! All teachers, new and returning, complete two to three weeks of training before school starts. There is lots to learn and brush up on before students come back to school! Teachers learn everything from AMS policies to instructional best practices and more.
AMS Fundamentals
One of the top priorities at AMS is to ensure that students and families are happy and successful at the school. Therefore, one of the crucial elements of teacher training is discussing AMS policies, goals, and standards. Principals go through the Teacher Manual in detail, as well as the behavior accountability system. Additional topics covered include safety procedures, how classrooms are set up, how to make learning FUN, and the general AMS culture.
Curriculum
While many of our teachers are already familiar with the curriculum and programs AMS uses, a refresher course can never hurt! Curriculum training helps teachers become intimately familiar with what they’ll be teaching as well as know how best to teach the content to students based on their individual learning styles and needs. Teachers also get a chance to prepare and practice a sample lesson! Some of the AMS curriculum includes Reading Mastery and Open Court for reading, Saxon and Study Island for math, My Pals science curriculum, and much more. More details on AMS curriculum are available here.
Tools
AMS strives to utilize some of the best technology available, and in order to do so effectively, teachers must be adept with the various platforms and programs. At training, the teachers learn how to use systems such as SchoolMaster for student information, Classdojo for parent communication, and general technology around the school as well as their teacher webpage for homework posting.
FUN!
Teachers get to have fun too! Training also includes a few little games, snacks, and a sneak peak at the big-picture plans for the school year. There is also plenty of classroom setup, planning, and collaboration time. And don’t forget about extracurricular activities and sports! Schedules and assignments for these are given during training as well. Finally, teachers wrap up training with “Meet the Teacher Night” and look forward to the first day of school!
We appreciate the work teachers do behind the scenes in order to best educate AMS students. A huge thanks goes out to all the teachers, as well as the admin who put together the trainings!
