Are There Any Charter School Enrollment Requirements?
Is my child guaranteed entrance into a charter school?
In recent years, enrollment rates in charter schools have escalated dramatically.
In fact, the 2016-17 school year saw the greatest growth to date!
As many as 185,900 students attended an Arizona charter school in the 2016-17 school year. That is an increase of nearly 10,000 students over the 2015-16 school year.
This is no surprise!
Charter schools in Arizona are a unique alternative to the traditional school system. Charter schools are public institutions that receive funding from private and state entities.
For this reason, charter schools are able to provide high-quality curriculum and resources to challenge students to exceed traditional standards.
With this in mind, it’s easy to see why so many parents are eager to find a charter school near them and asking ‘Are there any charter school enrollment requirements?’
Don’t fret—in this article, we’re breaking down all that you need to know about charter school enrollment!
Are There Any Charter School Enrollment Requirements?
In short, charter schools do not have enrollment requirements.
To elaborate, Arizona’s public charter schools are required by law to accept all students. As further detailed by the Arizona State Legislature:
“A charter school shall enroll all eligible pupils who submit a timely application unless the number of applications exceeds the capacity of a program, class, grade level or building.”
With this said, there are special circumstances that parents should be aware of when enrolling their child into a charter school.
As determined by the Arizona State Legislature, a charter school may give preference to returning charter school students and to siblings of students already enrolled in the charter school.
In addition, charter schools may give enrollment preference to students who are in foster care or meet the definition of unaccompanied youth.
Even more, charter schools are able to reserve capacity for students who are children, grandchildren, or legal wards of:
- Employees of the school
- Employees of the charter holder
- Members of the governing body of the school
- Directors, officers, partners or board member of the charter holder
All in all, parents can rest easy about potential charter school enrollment requirements!
